Window washing is a tedious task – so make sure you get it right the first time. To avoid having to redo your work, here’s our expert’s advice.

1. Choose a dry, cloudy day. Two hours.

Doing this work in direct sunlight may cause the cleaner to melt on the hot glass before you can wipe it off, leaving marks that are difficult to remove. If time does not cooperate, start on the shady side of the house. Otherwise, wait until the weather is better.

2. First remove the dirt and dust.

Before starting, remove the dirt from the window frame with a brush or vacuum with the dusting attachment on your machine. This will prevent the dirt from turning into muddy dirt when mixed with a cleaner or water. If your screen looks particularly dirty, remove it and wash it in warm, soapy water with a soft brush, then rinse it and let it dry before putting it back in place.

For quick dusting of the slats, wipe over and under with a microfibre cloth or a damp cloth.

You can also refresh your curtains at the same time by putting them in the dryer for 15 minutes in the “air only” cycle and quickly replace them to avoid folds.

3. Choose the right cleaner – and spray liberally.

Don’t hold back the spray, especially if your windows look very dirty. You need a lot of cleaner to dissolve and suspend the dirt so that it can be completely wiped off – little maintenance and you’ll see streaks.

The fine mist from the bottle stays where you spray until you wipe it off, which means fewer drops and less mess. Take a look at these other proven cleaners, depending on the job at hand:

Homemade window cleaner.

What you will need:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of 70% alcohol concentration
  • Mix the ingredients together and pour them into a spray bottle.

If you have children or pets, write the ingredients on the outside of the bottle for your safety.

4. Use a microfiber cloth.

ome people like to dry windows with newspaper, but it is better to use reusable microfibre cloths. “They’re super absorbent, washable and leave the glass shiny and streak-free,” says M. Forte..

Try Casabella microfiberglass cloths, which have a special honeycomb texture to remove water stains, stains and dirt from mirrors and glass without scratching.

SIf you prefer to use paper towels, choose a brand that is up to the task. Weak paper towels can shred and leave lint.

5. Skip the squeegee.

Professional window cleaners swear by them, but you have to know how to use them wisely.

Because of the risk of dirt and dripping, avoid using scrapers, especially for small windows, but they can be more useful on large windows (be careful, the use of a scraper can be complicated).

6. Break it down.

ou only need to clean your windows twice a year, but it’s even easier if you divide the work and do it piece by piece. When cleaning, wipe one side of the window horizontally and the other vertically. If streaks form, you will easily know whether they are on the outside or the inside.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
